Water Sanitation

Eastie Farm

I went to the Eastie Farm on February 10th.

The company is in the urban area of the East side of Boston, which is a place to confront food issues and restore community. I learned that this is a great company that the owners have really put a great deal of effort and lots of time into establishing. First of all, I heard that the first four years of their lives were all-volunteer work before creating this company. Four years of volunteer work is not easy and requires a strong will, determination, and energy. I thought that I should really respect them. And then, the theme of my presentation is “Clean water and water sanitation,” and what I learned from this field trip as it relates to my topic is the difference between urban runoff and rainwater. They were storing rainwater that fell from neighbors’ roofs. The reason, they said, is that rainwater is much better for growing crops than city water. So, I was able to learn that, unlike rainwater, the water flowing through the city is not for crops but is created for people to drink and use. In this way, they gave full consideration to the environment while growing crops.
