Eastie Farm

I visited an Eastie farm on February 10.

There are tying to do good environmental activities and make a good community.

In the first place, this farm is so open, and they make people who go to the farm and ask questions welcome. Every staff is friendly and everyone is knowledgeable about the environment and farm, so there are good places for people interested in these things.

I had an image that farms are located in rural places where it can take significant areas to grow vegetables, but this farm is located in an urban place with many houses. I wondered why they are organizing it here, but there were some efficient reasons. By building a farm in a town, local people can get healthy food easily. Actually, getting healthy food is difficult because many foods put in grocery stores are unhealthy, and if they are, they would be pricy. The most important thing is that they can cut the exhaust fumes because they don’t have to transit vegetables for long-distance.

The other thing is that they are making compost from food trash. Usually, food trashes are burned at a garbage incineration facility, emitting ash and urge air pollution. If they change food waste into soils, it’s good for the environment and cuts the harmful emissions.

Related to my research topic, water, I learned they store the rainwater and use them for vegetables. I was curious about the difference between city water and rainwater and asked about it. They said city water includes some chemicals, and it’s not suitable for plants, but rainwater includes some good ingredients plants want to have.

I was impressed that they care so much about the environment even though it’s challenging to run the farms by themselves.
