Sustainable Consumption/Production

Boston Public Market & hay market

I went to Boston Public Market and Hay Market on February 19th.
They sell a lot of local products. For example, they sell some fresh vegetables, fruits, and fish. I learned that most of the products came from Massachusetts and New England. I did not know where each product came from because it was not mentioned, but both places contribute to local production and local consumption. I thought these were better than commercial stores because they can contribute to the local economy. I also found something written about their mission. It says that its mission is to provide food to the community and educate the public about local sourcing and nutrition. I was surprised that the products’ price was lower than I expected. In Japan, market products are often more expensive than supermarkets. However, Boston Public Market and Hay Market sold a lot of affordable and fresh products. I thought this was very good because many people can buy them easily. I realized that some stores in Boston Public Market are working to reduce plastic. For example, they reduce plastic packaging and encourage customers to use reusable bags. On the other hand, I saw a lot of plastic packaging at Hay Market. In addition, many customers use plastic bags instead of using reusable bags. Our research is related to plastic issues, so it was useful to know the current situation of the plastic problem. I found that these places are related to local production for local consumption. However, I wanted to ask if they worked on the plastic problem. I recommend these places to people interested in the food system or local industry.
