I visited Eastie Farm on February 10, 2022.

Eastie Farm is a food-growing community space for neighborhoods. This farm is open to everyone. People in this area can enter freely and work and share crops together. The farm supports many people in various ways, mainly through its work for the local economy, agriculture, and environmental protection.

Fresh and Locally Food for Everybody

People who live in this area are likely to have comparatively lower incomes than downtown Boston. Therefore, healthy and fresh food is usually more expensive than other foods, so people tend not to afford it and buy unhealthy and less nourishing food. To improve this situation, they started this project.

Being Eco-Friendly

On this farm, we can see many Eco-friendly actions.

  1. Rainwater for growing crops (Collecting water with the cooperation of neighbors)
  2. Composting of food waste(Change waste food into the soil, and it helps to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from burning waste.)
  3. Transportation to the neighborhood(It reduces the carbon footprint of long-distance delivery.)

What I found surprising

When we asked them about climate change, they told us that climate change is a big problem to worry about; however, it is essential to think about the small things right in front of you rather than the whole problem. I felt that this kind of desire encouraged the food community to have deep ties to the local community.

Unfortunately, I didn’t get to see the growing crops, so I’d like to go back if I have the chance!
