I attended a lecture from a woman called Sara in Provost Hall, who runs an organization called “One Bead.” It provides children some programs about leadership or social issues. Her company put their students first, their voices, their ideas, and their opinions. I think this is a very good way to develop their leadership skills.
In her lecture, we thought about our core values. It is something that you really believe in. we use core values every day to make decisions. First of all, we chose 10 values, then dropped 5 from there, then I chose 3 values from them, and finally, I picked one. My core value was happiness. It was interesting that some chose family and some chose creativity.
She is currently in eight schools across the Boston area kind of all over the place. Seven of them are Boston public schools and then one is a charter school. She taught us the difference between public schools and charter schools. The Boston public schools are funded by the government. The charter schools can receive funding from the government but they can also fund-raise for themselves, so they have two-way fund-raise and have a little bit different structure. Also, she is trying s.to create leaders, so she provides some programs. The goals of this series are for young people to see themselves represented in positions of power before they have the opportunity to take action themselves.
I think she is a wonderful and successful woman, so her story was very impressive and informative for me.
