Interview with Mr. Tom Griffith

I interviewed Mr. Tom Griffith on ZOOM on March 11th.

He is a friend of Ms. Patt and lived in Niger, where my group is researching, for two years when he was younger. He first told us about ” Peace Corps”, founded by President Kennedy that sends volunteers to help developing countries. I understood that the organization is a bridge between the U.S. and poor countries. I also learned that Japan has something similar to this organization, which is the Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers.

He also shared with us some of his personal experiences. He taught English as an English teacher at a school. There were about 25 students in his class, about 75% boys and 25% girls. I believe that the percentage of girls was low because girls had to do work for their families at that time. And he was living without electricity, a car, internet, and enough water. Also, I learned that most people were self-sufficient.

Furthermore, I learned the dangers of volunteering. It was shocking to learn that more than 300 volunteer staff have lost their lives so far. The causes are illnesses, accidents, conflicts, and so on. I think that people must be very determined and motivated to save people.

When we asked what we can do to improve the current situation in Niger? he told us that the first step is to install a well and provide a clean water. Also, he showed us a picture of people trying to wash clothes and food in the sea, drinking seawater, taking a bath using seawater, and using it as a restroom. I was really surprised to see that they lived using the same water. So, I strongly felt the need to supply clean water. I am researching poverty in Niger, so I can use it as one of the solutions.

In addition, I’m wondering if Mr. Tom Griffith has had any dangerous experiences while volunteering. Finally, I recommend this interview to anyone who wants to volunteer and hear from the person who actually lived in a developing country. I’m so glad to hear the valuable and informative stories from Mr. Tom Griffith. I really appreciate him.
