Jamaica Plain

I visited Jamaica Plain on a field trip on February 23rd.

On that street, there are many small business shops. They are making some efforts to reduce hunger and create an eco-friendly environment. I went to a grocery store that sells local foods like vegetables and honey. By doing so, since no longer a need to transport trucks over long distances, exhaust gas emissions are reduced. There were many organic products in the store. They also had coffee beans and chocolate fair trade products. By purchasing these, the farmers’ workers would be paid sufficient wages. Therefore, this store is environmentally friendly and also helps fight poverty!

What surprised me the most was that the town had a fridge. People in the community can donate food. Since food waste is a big problem nowadays, people can reduce it by donating food to it instead of throwing it away. Also, since the food in this refrigerator can be used by anyone, I thought it would also help reduce hunger.

I also thought it’s amazing that citizens can keep this public fridge. Some people might try to steal it or damage it. I thought it was because everyone in the town was so cooperative that they were able to manage it.
