Climate/Environmental Protection Health & Well-being Reducing Inequalities Sustainable Consumption/Production Zero Hunger Zero Poverty

small business in JP

On February 23, I went to Jamaica Plain on a field trip. Various small businesses had developed there and were taking steps to address current issues.

In Jamaica Plain, there are small businesses such as bakeries, cafes, and grocery stores. Ginger, who we spoke with, said that these stores use local ingredients and run through local people. I was impressed that these small businesses are assisting in revitalizing local companies and industries.

In addition, their businesses were also taking care of environmental issues. In the back of the grocery store, there were a community refrigerator and recycling boxes, as shown in the photo. People donate food to this refrigerator and collect the food waste. Also, at the CARROT FLOWER, the food scraps are fridged and then composted for reuse in food cultivation. This way, excess food can be given to those who need it instead of being thrown away, and food waste can be reused effectively. This will help reduce the carbon dioxide emissions associated with waste disposal and improve climate change.

It was interesting that these things are closely related to what we are investigating. I would recommend this research mission to anyone who wants to learn about hunger and climate change.
