Me and Mai Takeyama interviewed Miyo san individually about decent work. We got some information from her.
1, What benefits and cons of working in Japan and US?
Miyo: There is a diverse country in the US, so you can meet up with many people who have different backgrounds at jobs. And more, they can do balance between jobs and lives. You do not have to go drinking with coworkers after working if you do not want to go. However, in Japan, it still has the culture that you have to do working for a long time by the time your bosses are done their tasks. Also, the more you work there for a long time, the larger you get the positions and salaries. But in the US, even you don’ t have to work for a long time, if you have just careers, you can get good salaries regardless ages.
2, What do you think of tipping culture? Have you ever experienced troubles in your American life?
Miyo: Yes, I have, Once, I forgot to put tips on the table and we left, the clerk chased me and said ” Give me tips!” So, Japanese hospitality is the best in the world though sometimes hard to change in the US because that is culture that started long time ago.
3, Then, what do your opinions on the second work?
Miyo: I think that’s a great idea. Actually, I do some volunteering. In the US, there is getting increase flexible working and it is also related to question1 though you can get extra skills to utilize your the most job if you use it better. Through this interview, we found out many cultural gaps between Japan and US. I think that in Japan, there are still having stereotypes on jobs but from the start covid, fortunately, we can get a new media zoom. Hopefully, it will make use of every job and spread various ways of working. Then, you can arrange your work-life balance depending on life.
