I went to the Eastie Farm on February 10.
I was surprised that the Eastie Farm was smaller than I expected, but multi crops were there. As I learned before visiting there, the farm was open-spaced, so people may not hesitate to enter or ask some questions about their farm.
From the explanation from the staff, I got interested in the system of the rain barrels. They can store the rainwater and reuse it for farming, life water, and so on. I thought it was effective because we can save water by using barrels. As I mentioned in the last blog, my research is about the water situation in China and the US, so I want to look up whether China has a similar system.
After listening to the description of the farm’s project, I asked one of the staff members about the connection between composting and clean water. He said that the Eastie farm promotes composting, but people’s use is still tiny, so people dispose of their food waste in a non-sustainable way. Because of a bit of understanding of composting, some rivers near the farm are still polluted. Therefore, it is essential to increase the number of places to compost food waste as much as possible. Also, letting people know about the advantages of composting can improve the current situation.
