Climate/Environmental Protection Reducing Inequalities Zero Hunger

Eastie farm

I went to the Eastie farm.

The farm was smaller than I thought, with each vegetable surrounded by bricks, like a private farm. But the farm is well equipped with tanks, fertilizer storage, and other facilities.

I learned they support their community through the farm. They provide fresh vegetables and give new jobs to local people. People who live in East Boston are likely not to have money, so they take over the space as a farm to be accessible to help these people. That’s why the farm is located in an urban area. The farm connects with the environment, food, and education, which means they solve whole problems.

They value the food cycle. Owners of the farm try waste crops to change into ash by incinerator because food waste interrupts the process. Also, they indicated how to turn food waste into the soil due to the food cycle. Besides, new ground is essential for the food cycle, so they explained the importance of showing how to create new soil.

They hold many barrels of rainwater. They got the rainwater from the roofs of the neighboring houses. They said their neighbors make sure what they do, so they make a good relationship. Rainwater from the roofs is a little bit dirty, but they don’t have to get this water clean because the microwaves in the rainwater make vegetables grow.

One of the workers said running the organization is the most challenging thing. They had to work at the farm as volunteers for the first four years. But now, they get some money from foundations and the government. They also sell products.

My presentation’s topic is hunger, so I questioned him about how does your farm help hunger. The worker answered they reach out to local people who don’t have enough money. They also join CSA, the initial of community-supported agriculture, and it is a program that provides fresh products at a low-cost and supports farmers in the area. Furthermore, they give food every week and on that night immediately if local people call them.

Finally, I thought that this farm is located in the city, and its efforts to the environment, poverty, and hunger are all valid. I believe this farm has a great way to solve all the problems at the same time.
