I visited Eastie Farm on February 10, 2022.
Eastie Farm is located in an urban area. They grow vegetables, fruits, reefs between houses. It was for the first time to me that visiting the farm in an urban area. This farm was established by Mr.Kannan. They support the local economy, environment, and food waste. He told us the local food is more expensive than vegetables which are sold in supermarkets. So, they sell food which is grown on their farm more cheap price for the people who don’t have enough money. It promotes CSA. It is Community Supported Agriculture. CSA is communities buying from farmers. It can support the local economy and people who don’t have enough money. Also, they use rainwater. They put the water pipe on the neighbor’s house, and save water. I think it is a good point to do farm in residential area because it can help each other like a water pipe, and neighbors can learn about local food easily. In addition, they help food waste. They use soil which includes food. Food waste can reduce by changing shapes. I didn’t know those things, so I got a lot of information and knowledge today.
The most surprising fact is about money. The government gave them the grant to do farm because it is a good thing for the economy, the environment, and many aspects. It shows everyone can do something good for the economy or environment easily. Starting a new thing is difficult but the government will support it, so I felt Boston is a kindly and can improve situation area.
My research is poverty so I can relate to food waste and rainwater systems. Developing countries lack of food and safe water so we can help them by using the knowledge that I learned today. Eatie farm is a small community, so helping developing countries is difficult now. But we should help those countries too, so my question is How long does it take to become enough scale to help developing countries? Finally, I recommend anyone who wants to help someone or is interesting in farming.
